Course on R
Organized By: Economic Research Group (ERG)
Period: 21st July, and 28th July 2018
Data science is an interdisciplinary field about scientific processes and systems to extract knowledge or insights from data in various forms. With the availability of substantial amount of data in various forms and resources, it has become essential for researchers and students to be equipped with skills needed to collect, process, analyze, and present the data.
The course will be taught as a series of workshops. Main topics and methods will be summarized and discussed in each lecture, and the participants will write the code to perform the task assigned to them during the lecture. The participants will learn how to write basic programs in R which is one of the most popular open source programming languages currently in use.
The students at the end of the course will be able to:
• Learn basic programming skills with R Programming
• Access the data from various sources and formats
• Reshape and clean the data for reporting and further analysis
• Explore and visualize the data
• Conduct statistics analysis by using R
• Perform reproducible research
The course will consist of 3 classes with 3 hours per class. Each class will be divided as follows-
• First Lecture: 3hrs (Practice Exercises will be given as assignments)
• Second and Third Lecture: 6hrs (including 1hr practice exercise and solution)
• All statistical tools are available online through packages
• Most R packages are accompanied by a peer reviewed publication
• Open Source
• Provides machine learning platform
• Free of Cost
• Online Based Support (Stack Overflow, R blog)
Popularity of R vs SPSS and Stata:
STATA and SPSS are widely used statistical software and starting from its inception, R is gaining popularity due to its flexibility in operation, ease of access, and large online support base. According to the recent number of jobs offered on ‘Indeed.com’, R is ranked 5th (below SQL, Python, Java and Hadoop) and well above STATA and SPSS. According to ‘r4stats’, there was a 25% decrease in usage of SPSS and a 1.5% increase in usage of STATA in scholarly articles between the year 2015-16. However, usage of R in scholarly articles increased around 25% in the same time period.
21st July, Saturday: 14:00 to 17:00
28th July, Saturday: 10:00 to 17:00

The course content is designed to benefit anyone without any prior knowledge of R or any other programming language. However, some knowledge about basic statistics (mean, regressions, etc.) is a must. Preference will be given to students who have completed 1 Statistics and 1 Econometrics courses. This course is targeted towards university students from any discipline and professionals working in the research field with little to no knowledge of R.
PS: Students are advised to bring their own laptop. Access to Laptop/Computer will be provided as per the capacity of ERG.
The course will be conducted in English.
